Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work

Happy New Year! 🥂🎊✨

How are you all feeling about 2023?! I’ll tell you what, we are EXCITED!

Here are some highlights of what 2023 will bring for us at Fit Fierce & Female:

  1. Both Tyler & Stephanie are getting married / having weddings this year! 💍

  2. Tyler is turning the big 30 🥳

  3. Stephanie’s husband, Carson, is graduating from medical school and starting his residency in Emergency Medicine – which means she’ll be moving (although we don’t know where yet!) 🙈

  4. Our online store is officially open! 🛍️

  5. We’ve launched our health coaching program and we’re now accepting clients! 💕

There’s going to be so much change this year, and we know we’re not alone in that. It’s exciting AND stressful. And that’s okay!

So as we start 2023, let’s get intentional about how we want to live our lives. Let’s focus on what’s important, figure out where our priorities are, and commit to being the fittest & fiercest version of ourselves.

What is a New Year’s resolution? (And do they even work?)

New Year’s Resolution: A promise to do something differently in the new year.

That sounds pretty cool right? In order to create a New Year’s resolution you’ve likely done some reflection of the past 12 months, and have thought about what you want your next 12 months to look like. That’s a really great step!

The problem that comes with a lot of New Year’s resolutions is that they’re either too extreme or too vague.

💥 Fierce Fact: 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February.

An example of an extreme resolution might look like, “I’m going to give up ____ completely.” That could be soda, alcohol, cigarettes, carbs, etc. When it comes to behavior change, restriction and all-or-nothing thinking are rarely successful.

This could also look like, “I will go to the gym everyday after work” when you currently struggle to increase movement in your life. Rather than building toward this goal, you’re basically saying you’ll just jump right to perfection. By not leaving room for small progress or even mistakes, you’re already setting yourself up for failure.

An example of a vague resolution might look like, “I’m going to eat healthier”, “I’m going to workout more”, or “I’m going to make time for self-care.” While those sound like really positive things, (and they are!) they’re just a first step. They’re not a complete goal yet.

In order for a goal to stick, it needs to be SMART – specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. It needs to be more than just an idea, it needs to be a plan.

How to turn your New Year’s resolution into a SMART goal.

If you haven’t read our SMART Goals or Goal Setting blog posts yet, go do that now!

But to simplify it, your goal needs 5 components:

SPECIFIC: What specific action will you take?

MEASURABLE: How will you measure or track this?

ACHIEVABLE: Is this plan achievable? How realistic is your goal?

RELEVANT: How is this relevant to your short-term and long-term goals?

TIME-BOUND: What is your time frame for this goal?

And if you’re ready to take it one step further, we’re here to help. We have different coaching programs, ranging anywhere from completely text-based to weekly video calls. Wherever you’re at right now, there’s something for you!

Fiercely Yours, Stephanie & Tyler
